History of Chestertown

The Town of Chester was incorporated in 1799, making it one of the oldest towns in the southern Adirondacks. In the town's early days the economy was based on timber and other natural resources. By the early 1900s, the Adirondacks were becoming a burgeoning tourist destination, as well as a "fresh air refuge" for tuberculosis patients. Chestertown, with its plentiful balsam forests, lakes and streams, benefited from both trends. It was during this time that Landon Hill, known then as Sunset Camp, was a bustling boarding house catering to tourists and those looking for healthier surroundings.

In the 1920s, during the prohibition era, Chestertown was a stop on the illegal alcohol trade route that ran from Canada to New York City. The house at the time was rumored to have been a way station that catered to the pleasures of bootleggers.
